Yes. The cities are where everyone meets... The game will divide a city into several(I 've seen as many as 97) "districts" in order to accomodate all of the players. This is a genius way of doing it IMO.

It's sort of layered:

- There are three continental servers: America (including Canada), Europe, and Korea. You are assigned to the server that best matches your location.
- Each city has multiple "Districts". You are randomly assigned to a district whenever you enter a city, but can move between them at will (unless the one you're trying to get to is full). The exception to this is that you can not move to districts on another continental server. There is, however, one "International District" which people from all three servers may enter.
- Outside of the cities, each party (include parties of 1) gets their own map, so there's no camping or competition for monsters and little to no lag.

I doubt it's just 3 continental servers, it's more like 3 data centers with 1 in each of the mentioned locations.

I played in the Beta and found the game has a lot to recommend it. One thing bothers me though ... if the GW servers go away I will no longer be able to play a game I may have become quite addicted to.

Does any one (staff, developer, etc) know if it will ever be possible to play GW on a small, private server?
